About Pilates
Pilates is named for its founder, Joseph Pilates, who brought his exercise method to New York from Germany in the 1920's. Pilates strengthens and elongates muscles, improves posture, and restores the body to balance.
With regular practice, results are very effective. Building a solid foundation is important. Proper recruitment of muscles and good alignment mean better results!
"Study carefully. Do not sacrifice knowledge to speed in building your solid exercise regime." Joseph Pilates, founder of the Pilates method of body conditioning
Pilates can help with numerous health conditions such as osteoarthritis, spinal problems such as herniated discs, and osteoporosis. Students referred by GP's or health practitioners with injuries or health conditions experience increased strength and mobility.
Pilates for Pregnancy & Postnatal Pilates
Many muscular and postural changes occur during pregnancy. These changes continue to affect the mother after the birth of the baby.
Pilates for pregnancy is modified to accommodate the changing body. Pregnancy specific exercises are introduced. A group Pilates class is no longer suitable, unless it is specially designed for pregnancy.
Postnatal Pilates helps Mum return to pre-pregnancy shape safely and effectively. More time is devoted to specific concerns of new mothers. We have found that this is even more important after Babies 2, 3, and beyond! A specific Postnatal programme is important in cases of twins or more, or when there have been difficulties during the pregnancy or birthing experience. For safety reasons, babies cannot come to group classes.
Pilates for pregnancy, and Postnatal Pilates are offered either as One-to-One lessons, or as small Privately arranged classes.
